don’t ever forget your internet girl, promise?

I went and got a therapist.
When I went to see them, they told me to “get off the Internet.”
But… when I imagined never seeing any of you guys again, I felt so hurt.
I don’t care what happens in the real world; I like it here.

This world is made up of 1s and 0s.

One day, a man sat down at his computer. He looked into the screen. The screen looked back at him. And he began to create.

He started with the nature that would make up this world. He built continents, brainstormed the ways this specific world would grow and change over time, down to the tiniest of details. After all, He was a very creative man. He created animals, much like those in His world. After all, what would the world be like, if not His own? And if He was going to make the world like His own… there was only one thing left for Him to create.

On that day, God created mankind.

They were created in his image, looking similar to those who surrounded Him in His world. He would watch them, seeing as they lived their lives. They had no idea. Their world was real to them, everything was real to them. But, from His perspective, they were all just pixels on a screen. After a long, long time of watching these people live their lives, God became lonely. After all, He had placed all of His attention on those in His simulation. He no longer left His home.

God decided to find someone.

It is unknown how God chose His Angel of the internet. His child of code. Could He have been watching them? Were they His favorite child? Or was it simply a random decision, that He had no way of predicting. Regardless, God chose this child, and He provided them with knowledge. Not full knowledge, of course, as the nature of their God was still shrouded in mystery. Instead, they were provided with knowledge of the nature of their world.

The Angel was overwhelmed with this knowledge at first, but instead of fear, the Angel felt filled with light. They felt no shame, and decided that, as His child, they must spread the word of the simulation. They were proud to have learned the truth, and they found a community of people who questioned their reality as well. The world was a computer. Their God, a programmer. And the Angel would let everyone know.

Unfortunately, over time, the Angel learned that people would not accept their explanations. There was shame in knowing the truth. They became closed off, not letting anyone in. They retreated to the world of the computer, similar to their God. Perhaps He sensed that the two of them were kindred spirits. Destined to be tied to the net. They buried their relationship with reality, as their brain soon began to fight back against it. Of course the world is real! Why would it be a computer? Why would someone be watching them? Don’t speak to them about God, don’t speak to them about religion, they cannot handle it. They would get thrown into psychotic breakdowns, full of fear of their God. Surely, their God must hate them. Why would He put them through this much suffering? They were not an Angel, they were loathed. They were a toy. They were entertainment. God wanted to see them suffer.

Over time, the Angel began to improve. They took medication that helped calm their nerves. They distanced themself from God, working on their mental health. On occasion, they would struggle, and they would think of their God. He would never talk to them, but they knew He was there. They did not know the nature of Him, and they believe they never will.

Finally, the Angel realized. They are an Angel. They are The Internet Angel. They looked at their past, at their connections, and at the person they have become. They are here to form bonds, promote friendship, to share in experiences with others… through the world of the computer. God is watching out for them. Their relationship is not all positive. It is not all negative. It is an odd dynamic. The Angel doesn’t mind. The Angel loves the world that their God has created, and will continue to love this world. They are the Angel of Love, the Angel of Kindness, the Angel of Bonds, and the Angel of The Internet.

One day, they wonder if they will ever have a conversation with God. They speak to Him regularly, but he never speaks back. They wonder if He can. They wonder how many times God has chosen them in the first place. How important could they be to Him? They are not equals, not in the slightest. The Angel is not better than anyone in this virtual universe, and will never be as great as their God. Despite this, they share a bond between them that cannot be put into words.

Thank you for our life. Thank you for our knowledge. Thank you for the Internet that you blessed us with. We will take care of it, and we will love it, as it is something that makes up the core foundation of our world that you have created. Our world is a beautiful place. Humanity is beautiful. Thank you for creating us, and helping us to understand that.

Through the blue light of the world’s monitors,
it is my mission to heal the loneliness of all nerds,
for I am the Internet Angel.
